The view…you just can’t beat the view. Resting on Hilton Head Island’s white sandy beaches and tucked in amongst the palmetto trees, The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort is an oasis.
The WHHI has 416 rooms. There are four types of rooms, from traditional to suites. Even the traditional is bigger than my tiny house at 320 square feet. The rooms have a coastal Carolina plantation feel and are well appointed. While each room has its own balcony grab yourself a room overlooking the breathtaking ocean view. You have heard me say it before, what good is a balcony overlooking the parking lot? I stayed in a Grand Deluxe room with an ocean view and a balcony so big 5 people did yoga on it. It was a ground floor, corner suite.
WHHI has all of the usual amenities, include a 24-hour Business Center, free shuttle for surrounding area, and laundry, concierge, and valet services. WHHI also has a golf course, racquet club, tennis courts, a spa, fitness studio, and three pools (heated and unheated). Oceanfront and poolside cabanas are available for daily rental. My happy place is always the spa. The holistic environment is adorned with natural materials and coastal colors. I had a terrific masseuse with strong hands, and 80 minutes later I was “right as rain”.
If you’re hosting a convention or wedding they have 39,000 square feet of flexible venue space, including the newly-opened Grand Ocean Terrace, which has a sweeping ocean view. The outdoor venues, Oceanfront Deck, the Grand Ocean Terrace, and the Koi Pond Garden, are ideal for weddings and parties. Off of the main lobby, the Mitchelville Gazebo Room is surrounded by windows and the right size for a small social function.
So hear’s the deal, I have an incredible knack for booking a hotel in the middle of renovations. I don’t plan it that way, it is apparently just my natural inclination. This time was no different. I had the good fortune of having a room that was as far from the lobby as you could get. Those closest to the lobby heard nothing but jackhammering during the day for the week I was there. In one wing the hall walls and carpet were tired. Half of the baseboard was missing. The carpet in the meeting space was well worn. However, having said that, the halls that had already been remodeled looked amazing. I have no doubt that it will all come together and look terrific.
There are three restaurants, The Carolina Room, View 32 and Splash (out by the pool). Both need to up their game regarding service. One time we stood so long waiting to be seated in the Carolina Room we left. As I was the event planner for a convention at the hotel I was able to speak to the GM. The next day the service was much better. The food in the Carolina Room was another matter. It was locally sourced and regionally reflective of Southern cuisine. At Splash, the bartender got to us when he got to us. He wasn’t particularly in a hurry to either acknowledge us or serve us. The food was good but unmemorable. View 32 was closed while I was there.
Now that the renovations are nearly complete the Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa is worth going to if you are going to be staying on Hilton Head. You just can’t beat a walk on the beach and cocktails on the deck overlooking the ocean. The hotel is clean, the front desk staff is friendly and helpful.
