7 Best Train Trips

Nothing is more spectacular than watching Autumn take its final dance with summer. Instead of taking a drive this Autumn, why not catch a train. Leave the driving to the Engineer while you sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the fall foliage.

Alaska- Alaska Railroad Denali Star Train

From Anchorage to Fairbanks you can take the Alaska Railroad Denali Star Train. View a variety of colorful foliage through the dome car windows. The 12-hour train journey will afford you a glimpse of Denali and maybe even the northern lights!

California- Napa Valley Wine Train

If you haven’t done it, don’t miss the Napa Valley Wine Train. For three hours, you’ll sit back on this luxurious vintage train and enjoy delicious gourmet dishes served with delectable wine pairings. Book your seats in the two-story vista dome car for the best views of Napa Valley’s foliage.

Colorado/New Mexico- Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad

If you have always wanted to experience a ride on a historic train, you will enjoy this coal-fired steam engine. Half-day or full-day trips on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad are available. The narrow-gauge steam train travels along the Colorado-New Mexico border. Chug 64 miles up elevations reaching 10,000 feet. History buffs will enjoy the old buildings along the way. The open gondola car is perfect for spotting wildlife.

Georgia- Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

The four-hour, 26-mile excursion is perfect for enjoying the glory of the season. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is a spectacularly scenic journey running along the Roccoa River in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Relax in your vintage car and take it all in. Grab lunch at the George-Tennessee border and stroll through the charming little shops.

Ohio- Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

Hop aboard the Fall Flyer. This route is littered with sugar maples turning various shades of fire, pumpkin, and sunflower yellow. The 3.5-hour loop journeys through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The train has been operating since the 1880s. Treat yourself to the dining car with a view. Watch for special event trains that include beer tasting and unique costumed Halloween rides.

New England- Amtrak’s Downeaster Route

For one of Autumn’s best shows book a seat on Amtrak’s Downeaster route. Travel between Boston and Maine for stunning panoramic leaf-turning experience. Sit in a vintage dome car from the 1950s as you ride through the gorgeous Adirondack Mountains. A window-covered car usually joins the Adirondack route (Albany to Montreal), where you can take in some of the best views of upstate New York’s fall foliage.

New Hampshire-Mount Washington Cog Railway

Summit Mount Washington as you take the Mount Washington Cog Railway. This railroad has been operating for over 144 years! Enjoy a three-hour roundtrip excursion on one of two vintage steam locomotives. Catch a glimpse of five states, Canada and the Atlantic Ocean. While the mechanics are modern, the coach interior is a throwback to the 1900s.
